Past Exhibits 2015

Exhibition Schedule for Kiwanis Gallery 2015

December 30, 2014 to February 22  Dear Little Friends: Ceramics by Alysse Bowd

Dear Little Friends refers to twenty letter carrying machines designed for the safe delivery of your most tender notes, thoughts and warmth. They are machines equipped for all forms of travel.

They will hop and dance, fly, jump and skip,

Or some will decide to sail as a ship.

Whatever their mode they’ll arrive in delight,

Then with your response they’ll be off like a kite.

Use them with care, respect what they do,

If you’re kind and gentle, they’ll work just right for you.

By creating these unique porcelain machines, Alysse, a Red Deer artist, brings the fantastical, the extravagant and the make-believe into daily routine.

“My work dearly loves to laugh, and to chat and to make friends and if you get close enough you might find yourself befriended. I believe in giggling and daydreaming and that when these things combine they can take you into the most wondrous of worlds.” Join Alysse in one of these wondrous worlds!

First Friday Red Deer, January 2 from 6:00 to 8:00 pm. Refreshments will be served.

February 24 to April 26         Take a Second Look at Your Plate: Photographs by

                                                Anne Marie Resta

Seeking an artistic challenge, Edmonton photographer, Anne Marie Resta began a year-long study of a familiar subject – vegetables. But as the weeks progressed, she found herself taking a second, and unexpected, look at her subject. A growing awareness of the abundance of food available to Albertans year ‘round, coupled with thoughts of how far our food travels before it reaches us, and the vast amount of gas and oil used in the process, resulted in some changes in Anne Marie’s behaviour. Will this exhibit inspire you to change your behavior too? Come and see what she has ‘dished’ up for you and take a second look at the food on your plate!

First Friday Red Deer, March 6 from 6:00 to 8:00 pm. Refreshments served.

June 22 to August 23 Goin’ to California: My Motorcycle Diaries, Watercolours by

                                    Susan Barker

Who doesn’t love a road trip? Just those two words can evoke feelings of adventure, excitement and exploration. Susan and her husband John travel by motorcycle where the feeling of freedom is compounded by the wind, open air, sights and smells that delight one’s senses. As they ride along the back highways and through small towns, Sue explores her world through a travel diary notebook in which she records where they rode, stopped, people they met, and things they saw. This exhibit is the culmination of the many trips they took to the USA, so come and explore this world through this Red Deer artist’s eyes!

October 20 to November 22            Second Thoughts: Works by Joanne Madeley

Joanne’s artwork explores how people think. Human thought has often been likened to gears turning inside of someone’s head. However, thoughts are not neat, orderly or predictable like a cog in a machine; they are instead shaped by influences like imagination, emotions and survival instincts. How does this Edmonton artist portray thought processes in prints and drawings? Instead of gears, Joanne depicts thoughts as individual figures whose ideas or state of being can be read from their faces and situations. You must come to the exhibit and see for yourself!
