Past Exhibits 2012

January 5 to February 26, 2012           The Gardens at Trevarno: Works by Sally Towers-Sybblis

The Trevarno Gardens in Cornwall, England, have inspired Sally, a local Red Deerian, to paint imagery such as birds, sunken gardens, ponds, boathouses, clay pots and flowers to which she will add some of her calligraphic quotes. As an artist, Sally feels a social responsibility to paint the beauty of creation, so the viewer makes a vital connection to the land as she has done. The Gardens at Trevarno are the jewel in the crown of the 70 acre estate with its enchanting gardens and grounds featuring Cornwall’s largest and most diverse plant collections set within magnificent formal, informal and woodland areas. We encourage you to visit their site, Trevarno Country Estates Garden Cornwall, and then prepare yourself for a breath of spring in the middle of winter in our very own Red Deer with Sally’s beautiful watercolour paintings!

First Friday, January 6 from 6:30 to 8:30 pm. Artist in attendance. Refreshments will be served.

First Friday Opening, February 3rd from 6:30 to 8:30 – Performer Cassandra McNaughton played guitar and sang.

Feb 28 to April 29           Fractals Infinitum: Mixed Media by Elyse Eliot-Los and Digital Fractal Imagery by Janice  Johnson

A Fractal (derived from fractalus, Latin for broken or fractured) is a mathematics term coined by Benoit Mandelbrot in 1975 to describe equations that, for Elyse and Janice, are the best existing mathematical descriptions of many natural forms, such as coastlines, snowflakes, crystals, and mountains or parts of living organisms. They work with these math equations to produce gorgeous digital images called “Fractals”. For them, mathematics does not have to be a bunch of complicated formulas that are beyond comprehension. Fractals are a marriage between geometry and art. Let your imagination soar and try and discover what these Fractals mean to you as the inspired viewer!

Both artists have taken differing routes to producing Fractal images.  Elyse became mesmerized by this concept after years of making “Mandalas” which are also based on geometric structure. The fractals are more dynamic by incorporating spiral-like forms to the circle.  Janice has made Mandalas as well, however her inspiration for producing fractal images was inspired by a love of numbers and the fascination of that which may be produced digitally.  Fractals, to her, are a visual manifestation of the abstraction of mathematics.

First Friday, March 2 from 6:30 to 8:30 pm Come and meet both our out-of-town artists, Elyse from Benalto and Janice from Calgary, and discover a world of abstract art through math!

TASTE: the spicy petal of the nasturtium.

October 17 to November 25 Beyond the Looking Glass: Photographs by Roberta Murray

Reality – shift your perspective and catch glimpses of life out of the corner of your eye. Roberta, through the viewfinder of her camera, sees a small rectangular representation of reality which is isolated and distorted. Beyond the Looking Glass explores a place where dreams and nightmares exist together and the distinction between truth and fiction becomes blurred. Using deliberate camera manipulations, hand painted or created textures, merging high and low tech equipment, Roberta creates stories in her photographs which allow the viewer to interpret them based on their own experiences and biases. Creepy or happy; which dreams will you be interpreting?

First Friday, November 2, from 6:30 to 8:30 pm. Join Roberta on this journey beyond the looking glass. Refreshments will be served.
